Choosing a Red Dot Magnifier: 3x vs 5x vs 6x

For most shooters a 3x magnifier is the right choice. It gives the widest field of view (about 7°, or roughly 12 m across at 100 m), the most forgiving eye position and the lightest package. Step up to 4x, 5x or 6x only if you regularly shoot beyond about 150 m or need to see small targets clearly, and accept a narrower view and a less forgiving head position in return.

Whatever the power, the magnifier has to sit at the same height as your red dot or holographic sight, or the dot will not be centred when you flip it in. It is an easy mistake to avoid.

Key takeaways

  • 3x magnifiers typically give a 6.8–7.5° field of view; 6x magnifiers give 3.7–4°, about half as much.
  • A magnifier has no reticle of its own; it enlarges the dot or holographic reticle of the sight in front of it.
  • Holosun's HM3X Micro and HM6X ship with spacers for 1.41 in (35.8 mm) and 1.63 in (41.4 mm) heights, and SIG's JULIET4 adds a 1.53 in (38.9 mm) spacer.
  • Eye relief is fixed and short, typically 55–70 mm (2.2–2.75 in), so the magnifier must sit in the right place on the rail.
  • Flip-to-side mounts swing the magnifier 90° out of the way for 1x shooting.

How a magnifier works

A red dot magnifier is a small fixed-power telescope that mounts behind a 1x sight. It adds no reticle; it magnifies the target and the aiming point your red dot or holographic sight already shows. A flip-to-side (FTS) or switch-to-side (STS) mount lets you swing it out of the way for 1x shooting, then swing it back in when you need detail.

With an LED red dot, the dot is magnified along with the target, so any blur or starburst is magnified too. EOTech states that its holographic 1 MOA dot stays 1 MOA with a magnifier in place while the target gets bigger. If dots already look smeared to you, read our astigmatism guide before buying.

The table uses each maker's published specifications for the magnifiers we stock. Field of view at 100 m is calculated from the angle.

Magnifier Power Field of view Width at 100 m (109 yd) Eye relief Weight
Holosun HM3X 3x 7° 12.2 m 70 mm (2.75 in) 9.8 oz (278 g)
Holosun HM3X Micro 3x 7° 12.2 m 67 mm (2.6 in) 8.47 oz (240 g)
SIG JULIET3 Micro 3x 6.8° 11.9 m not published 9.9 oz (281 g)
EOTech G33 (with STS mount) 3x 7.3° 12.8 m 55.9 mm (2.2 in) 10.6 oz (300 g)
EOTech G43 3x 7.5° 13.1 m 63.5 mm (2.5 in) 11.3 oz (320 g)
SIG JULIET4 4x 6.25° 10.9 m not published 12.5 oz (357 g)
EOTech G45 5x not published – 67 mm (2.6 in) similar to G33
Holosun HM6X 6x 3.7° 6.5 m 65 mm (2.56 in) 11.6 oz (329 g)
SIG JULIET6 6x 4° 7.0 m not published 14.7 oz (416 g)

3x: the all-rounder

A 3x doubles the field of view of a 6x, which makes it quicker to find the target and easier to use from awkward positions. Examples include the Holosun HM3X, the lighter HM3X Micro, the SIG JULIET3 Micro and EOTech's G33 and G43.

4x and 5x: more detail, less view

The SIG JULIET4 and the EOTech G45 sit in the middle. EOTech describes the G45 as adding "an additional 2X magnification for precision aiming at greater distances" over the G33.

6x: maximum reach

The Holosun HM6X and SIG JULIET6 give the most detail but roughly half the field of view of a 3x. The exit pupil also shrinks: a 24 mm objective at 6x gives a 4 mm exit pupil, so your eye has to be more precisely centred.

Expert tip

Set the magnifier's diopter before you do anything else. Flip it in, look at a plain wall and turn the eyepiece until your red dot is sharp. The Holosun HM3X and HM6X offer ±3 dioptres of adjustment and the JULIET3 Micro ±2, which also helps if your eyesight needs a small correction. Keep your shooting glasses on either way.

Matching the height

The magnifier's optical centre must match the dot's height above the rail. Red dots on AR-pattern rifles usually sit at 1.41 in (35.8 mm) for absolute co-witness or between 1.535 in (39 mm) and 1.63 in (41.4 mm) for lower 1/3. The Holosun HM3X Micro and HM6X mounts cover 1.41 in and 1.63 in with an included spacer; SIG's JULIET4 includes 1.41 in, 1.53 in and 1.63 in spacers. EOTech says its magnifiers work with all EOTech sights and with red dots at co-witness or lower 1/3 heights. Check your dot's figure in our red dot mount height chart.

Taller 1.93 in (49 mm) and 2.26 in (57.4 mm) dot mounts need a matching tall magnifier mount, which most of these do not include.

Where to put it on the rail

Eye relief on these magnifiers is fixed at roughly 55–70 mm. Mount the magnifier so your eye naturally lands at that distance from the eyepiece when your cheek is on the stock, then place the red dot anywhere in front of it. Leave enough room for the flip mount to swing clear of the charging handle and any rear sight.

Buy the pair together?

A matched combo removes the height question. We stock several, including the Holosun HS510C and HM3X combo, SIG's ROMEO5XDR Gen II with a JULIET5-Micro 5x, and EOTech's Holographic Hybrid Sights, which pair an EOTech with a G33, G43 or G45. See all of them in red dot and magnifier combos, and read EOTech holographic sights explained for the HHS bundles.

Magnifier or LPVO?

A dot plus magnifier keeps a true unmagnified 1x view and lets you remove the magnification completely. An LPVO is a single optic with its own reticle, variable power and usually better image quality at the top end, but it is heavier and has a much tighter eye position at 1x than a red dot. Our red dot vs holographic vs LPVO comparison and what is an LPVO? go into the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 3x or 5x magnifier better?

For most shooting, 3x. It gives nearly twice the field of view and a more forgiving eye position. Choose 5x or 6x if you regularly shoot at longer range and want more detail.

Do magnifiers have their own reticle?

No. They magnify the reticle of the sight in front of them. The only adjustment on the magnifier itself is usually the eyepiece focus and, on some, a small centring adjustment.

Will any magnifier fit my red dot?

Most will, provided the magnifier is set to the same height as the dot. Check the dot's mount height and the spacers supplied with the magnifier before you buy.

Can I use a magnifier with a holographic sight?

Yes. EOTech's G33, G43 and G45 are designed for its holographic sights, and third-party magnifiers work too if the height matches.
