Trijicon's RMR is the pistol optic with the longest service record. Holosun's 507-class sights give you the most features for the money. SIG's ROMEO range makes most sense when there's a SIG slide underneath. None of the three is a wrong choice. For most UK range, competition and airsoft use, a Holosun 507C or EPS gives the best day-to-day value, and the RMR earns its premium when durability outweighs everything else.
The three got to the top in different ways, and knowing how tells you more about which suits you than any one spec will.
Key takeaways
- The Trijicon RMR Type 2 runs on a CR2032 that Trijicon rates at over 4 years of continuous use at setting 4 of 8 on the adjustable-LED models. It has no motion activation or solar.
- Holosun's 507C X2 adds a side-tray CR1632 rated at 50,000 hours, Solar Failsafe, Shake Awake and a 2 MOA dot / 32 MOA circle Multi-Reticle System.
- SIG's ROMEO-X Compact and ROMEO-X Pro use MOTAC motion activation and a side-loading CR1632 rated at 20,000 hours.
- Footprints differ inside each brand. SIG uses Shield RMSc on the ROMEO-X Compact and DeltaPoint Pro on the ROMEO-X Pro. Holosun uses RMR on the 507C and K on the 507K.
- Solar Failsafe is on Holosun's C models (507C, 407C) and the 508T and 509T, not on the K-series micro sights.
Three design philosophies
Trijicon RMR: durability first
RMR stands for Ruggedized Miniature Reflex, and the name tells you what it's for. Trijicon's spec sheet highlights a patented housing shape, and the RMR's reputation was built on years of hard use on duty pistols and rifles. It also set the footprint that most of the industry now copies. The feature list is short on purpose. The Trijicon RMR Type 2 comes as an adjustable-LED model with eight brightness settings or an automatic-LED model. It runs on a single CR2032, and on the adjustable models Trijicon rates that at over 4 years of continuous use at setting 4 of 8.
The trade-offs are just as well known. On the classic RMR the battery fits from underneath, so changing it means taking the sight off and checking zero again. The 22 × 16 mm window is modest by today's standards. Trijicon's newer Trijicon RMR HD answers both: it has a top-loading CR2032, a larger window and a 55 MOA circle around a 1.0 or 3.25 MOA dot, and it still fits the RMR footprint. The rest of the Trijicon RMR range sits at the premium end on price.
Holosun: the most features for the money
Holosun competes by giving you more of everything you can measure. The Holosun HS507C X2 is the clearest example. It has a 7075-T6 aluminium housing on the RMR footprint, a side-tray CR1632 rated at 50,000 hours at setting 6, Solar Failsafe, Shake Awake motion activation, and a Multi-Reticle System that switches between a 2 MOA dot, a 32 MOA circle or both. The X3 doubles the rating to 100,000 hours.
The circle is more useful than it sounds. It's quick to pick up close in, and it stays readable as a shape for astigmatic eyes that smear a lone dot. Holosun also offers enclosed sights (the EPS family and titanium 509T) and slim K-footprint micro sights (507K, 407K). The Holosun pistol range is the widest of the three. What Holosun doesn't yet have is the RMR's length of documented service. That gap narrows every year, but it's real.
SIG ROMEO: built around SIG pistols
SIG's pistol ROMEOs make most sense next to SIG's pistols. SIG builds the SIG ROMEO-X Compact on the Shield RMSc footprint for the P365. The SIG ROMEO-X Pro uses the DeltaPoint Pro footprint, and the ROMEO1PRO mounts to SIG's PRO slide cut. Both ROMEO-X models have a 7075 aluminium housing, MOTAC motion activation (the same idea as Shake Awake), a side-loading CR1632 rated at 20,000 hours, and a choice of circle-dot, 3 MOA or 6 MOA reticles. The SIG ROMEO range sits between the other two: more electronic convenience than Trijicon, and a better fit when the pistol underneath is a SIG.

Figures are from Trijicon's RMR spec sheet, Holosun's and SIG's product pages. Makers measure battery life at different brightness settings, so treat the hours as a guide, not a like-for-like race. Our red dot battery chart lists the cell for each optic we stock.
Footprints: the decision inside the decision
Whichever brand you prefer, the footprint narrows your choice. The RMR pattern is the closest thing pistol optics have to a universal standard. Holosun's 507C and 407C use it, so an RMR-cut slide or plate takes either brand directly. The compact class is more fragmented. Holosun's 507K and 407K use its K footprint, SIG's ROMEO-X Compact uses Shield RMSc, and the ROMEO-X Pro uses DeltaPoint Pro. Adapter plates bridge most gaps, at the cost of extra height and another screw joint to look after.
So work in this order: identify your slide's cut or plate system, then shop within the optics that fit it directly. Our pistol red dot footprint chart maps every optic we stock, and RMR vs RMSc explained covers the two main patterns.
Expert tip
Compare battery access as seriously as battery life. A sight rated for years is still a chore if every battery change means removing it and re-zeroing. Side-tray and top-load designs let you swap the cell on a fixed date, such as every new season, without touching zero.
Honest recommendations
- Hardest use, longest service, budget available: the Trijicon RMR range. You're paying for the record, and that's worth paying for when failure matters most.
- Best all-round value and modern convenience: Holosun's 507C X2 or X3 on an RMR cut, or the enclosed EPS family if the gun gets wet.
- A SIG pistol underneath: the matching ROMEO-X. The Compact goes directly onto RMSc-cut slides such as the P365, and the Pro onto DPP cuts.
- Astigmatism: a circle reticle is the most forgiving, whether it's Holosun's 32 MOA circle, SIG's circle-dot or the RMR HD's 55 MOA circle. See the astigmatism guide.
UK note
In England, Wales and Scotland most handguns are prohibited under section 5(1)(aba) of the Firearms Act 1968, which covers any firearm with a barrel under 30 cm or an overall length under 60 cm. British buyers of these optics are mainly using long-barrelled pistols, pistol-calibre gallery rifles and airsoft replicas, or hold Section 5 authority. Northern Ireland has its own law, the Firearms (Northern Ireland) Order 2004, without an equivalent general ban on short firearms. That use profile tilts the value case towards Holosun, because few British optics face duty-holster abuse. Confirm your own licensing position with your firearms licensing department.
Frequently asked questions
Will a Holosun fit a slide cut for a Trijicon RMR?
The 507C, 407C, 508T and 507COMP will, because Holosun lists them as RMR footprint. The K-series micro sights and the EPS won't mount directly, although the EPS comes with an RMR-to-K plate.
Is the Trijicon RMR worth the extra money over a Holosun?
It depends what you're insuring against. The RMR's premium buys the deepest service record in pistol optics. For club competition, airsoft and general range work, a 507-class Holosun gives you more convenience for less.
Do Shake Awake and MOTAC actually matter?
Yes. They put the emitter to sleep when the gun is still and wake it on movement. That prevents both a dot left on until the battery dies and a dot that's off when you need it.
Which fits a SIG P320?
That depends on the slide cut, which varies by P320 model. Check whether yours is cut for the ROMEO-X Pro's DeltaPoint Pro pattern, SIG's PRO cut or something else before ordering. Holosun also makes the SCS 320 for P320 slides.
