For most pistol shooters in 2026, the best red dot is a Holosun 507C X2 or X3 on a full-size slide, or a Holosun EPS Carry on a slim one. If you want the longest service record, buy the Trijicon RMR. For competition, look at the Trijicon SRO or the Holosun 507COMP. Before any of that, though, make sure the optic's footprint matches your slide cut.
This guide sorts our range by slide size and use, with the published specs that separate the options: footprint, window, battery and emitter type.
Key takeaways
- Footprint first: RMR for most full-size slides (often via a plate), RMSc or Holosun K for slim slides, DeltaPoint Pro for SIG's ROMEO-X Pro and EOTech's EFLX.
- The Holosun 507C X2 combines an RMR footprint, a side-loading CR1632 battery, solar backup and a 2 MOA dot with a 32 MOA circle. The X3 is rated at 100,000 hours at setting 6.
- Trijicon rates the adjustable-LED RMR Type 2 at over 4 years of continuous use at setting 4 of 8 on one CR2032.
- Enclosed pistol sights (Holosun EPS family, Trijicon RCR, Holosun 509T, Burris FastFire E) keep rain and grit off the emitter.
- For competition, the big windows win. The 507COMP window measures 1.1 × 0.87 in, against 0.91 × 0.63 in on the 507C.
First, check your footprint
A red dot only fits a slide cut, or adapter plate, made for its footprint. Most full-size optics-ready pistols take the RMR footprint, usually through a plate. Slim and micro-compact slides use the narrower RMSc footprint, or Holosun's closely related K pattern. Our RMR vs RMSc footprint guide explains the difference. The footprint compatibility chart maps every optic we stock to its pattern.

Best for full-size pistols
Holosun 507C X2 and X3: the all-rounder
The Holosun HS507C X2 is the optic we point most full-size owners to. It sits on the RMR footprint and has a 7075-T6 aluminium housing. The CR1632 battery loads from a side tray, so you can change it without taking the sight off the slide. Holosun's Multi-Reticle System switches between a 2 MOA dot, a 32 MOA circle, or both together, and Solar Failsafe and Shake Awake motion activation look after the battery. Holosun rates the X2 at 50,000 hours at setting 6. The newer HS507C X3 doubles that to 100,000 hours and has a slightly taller 0.91 × 0.67 in window.
Trijicon RMR Type 2: the benchmark for hard use
The Trijicon RMR Type 2 set the footprint that most of the industry copies. Its window is modest at 22 × 16 mm, and it has none of Holosun's solar or motion features. What you are paying for is Trijicon's patented housing shape and a long service record. Trijicon rates the adjustable-LED models at over 4 years of continuous use at setting 4 of 8 on one CR2032, and we stock 1.0, 3.25 and 6.5 MOA dots. The Trijicon RMR range also includes the RMR HD, which pairs a 1.0 or 3.25 MOA dot with a 55 MOA circle and is designed to fit the same RMR footprint.
Sealed options
If the pistol gets used outdoors, look at an enclosed emitter. The full-size Holosun EPS weighs 1.4 oz and uses Holosun's K footprint and comes with an RMR-to-K plate. The Trijicon RCR is Trijicon's sealed sight, built on the RMR footprint. The titanium Holosun HE509T X2 has its own 509T footprint and comes with an RMR adapter plate.
Best for slim and micro-compact slides
Slim slides need a narrow optic. The Holosun EPS Carry is our first choice here. It is fully enclosed, weighs 1.23 oz, is 1.07 in wide, and comes with an RMSc-to-K plate. For a lighter open sight, the Holosun HS507K X2 weighs 1 oz and has the same 0.77 × 0.58 in window. The SIG ROMEO-X Compact mounts directly to Shield RMSc cuts, has SIG's MOTAC motion activation and a side-loading CR1632, and is rated at 20,000 hours. The compact pistol red dot guide goes deeper on this class.
Best for competition
Competition rewards a big window and fast pickup. The Trijicon SRO sits on the RMR footprint (Trijicon sells a combined RMR and SRO plate), and we stock it with 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 MOA dots. The Holosun HS507COMP has a 1.1 × 0.87 in window and a 2 MOA dot with a selectable 8, 20 or 32 MOA circle. It runs on a side-tray CR1632 but has no solar panel. SIG's ROMEO-X Pro uses the DeltaPoint Pro footprint rather than RMR, so check your slide or plate first.
Worth knowing about
- EOTech EFLX: DeltaPoint Pro footprint, top-loading CR2032, and 3 or 6 MOA dots rated at about 25,000 and 20,000 hours respectively at level 5.
- Burris FastFire E: a fully enclosed 3.5 MOA sight on the Aimpoint ACRO footprint, with a side battery and a 60,000-hour rating.
- Primary Arms SLx RS-10R: an RMR-footprint 3 MOA dot at the entry end of the range.
Red, green or gold?
Most pistol optics come in red, and many also come in green or gold. Many shooters find green or gold easier to pick up in bright daylight. Holosun quotes the same 50,000-hour rating for the red and green 507C X2, so battery life is no longer much of a reason to choose. See green vs red dot sights for the detail.
UK note
In England, Wales and Scotland most handguns are prohibited under section 5(1)(aba) of the Firearms Act 1968, which covers any firearm with a barrel under 30 cm or an overall length under 60 cm. In Britain, pistol optics go mainly on airsoft replicas, long-barrelled pistols and pistol-calibre gallery rifles, and to holders of Section 5 authority. Northern Ireland has its own law, the Firearms (Northern Ireland) Order 2004, without an equivalent general ban on short firearms. Confirm your own position with your firearms licensing department.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best pistol red dot for the money?
For a full-size slide, the Holosun 507C X2 gives you an RMR footprint, a side-tray battery, solar backup and the circle-dot reticle for mid-range money. On a slim slide, the 507K X2 is the equivalent open sight.
Do I need an enclosed pistol red dot?
Not for dry indoor ranges. For anything used outdoors in British weather, an enclosed sight such as the EPS Carry stops rain and grit settling on the emitter and blanking the dot.
Is the Trijicon RMR worth the extra over a Holosun?
If you want the longest track record and don't need solar, motion activation or a circle reticle, yes. For club competition, airsoft and general range use, a Holosun gives you more features for less money.
Will a pistol red dot hold zero?
Yes, if it is mounted on the correct footprint with the right screw length, degreased threads, medium thread locker and the torque figure in the optic's manual.
